A Short History of Battery A, 680th Glider Field Artillery Battalion
History of Able Battery - Short Account of Battery "A", 680th Glider Field Artillery Battalion tells the story of the men who comprised this group of paratroopers that was part of the 17th Airborne Division, which was activated in April 1943. From Camp Mackall, North Carolina, to the Battle of the Bulge and the Airborne crossing of the Rhine, and finally "[taking] part in the final great victory in Europe by helping to clean out tough resistance in the Ruhr pocket in Northwestern Germany," this first-hand account by members of Battery A tells a story of American courage and strength facing our enemies in World War II.
I don't know when this history was written. My father, Rhinhardt Roth, was a Battery A paratrooper and started attending 17th Airborne Division Association gatherings in the mid-1980s. It was at one of those gatherings where his wife (my mother), Florence (Zimmer) Roth, obtained a copy of the history. She retyped it and made photocopies that she gave out at a later Association gathering. Her 1980s-era "reprint" is the source of the PDF below.
